Ever Considered Art In A Business
by Lisa Hennings

From the minute that someone steps into your reception
they are analysing the sort of business you have and if
they like it. Remember that it's not only the important
clients that you need to impress but everyone who enters
your reception will comment to their friends and
acquaintances if they are truly impressed. Each person is a
prospective source of income because, at the end of the
day, you really don't know who they might tell and how the
news of your reception could travel!
Art in whatever form can be a useful diversion and
distraction from all the ugly things that also go on in an
office; the cables, the piles of papers and, let's face it,
computers are hardly the most aesthetically pleasing of
objects. The right piece of art in the right place will
work wonders and can make a huge difference to the image
and therefore, at the end of the day, the profitability of
the business. It can be uplifting and intriguing and feed
the curiosity of those who visit and give them an insight
into the people who run the company. It can reflect an open-
minded approach, a business that is switched on culturally
and open to new ideas and working patterns.
Each year companies spend millions protecting their brands
and corporate identities from infringements. Whilst your
business may not be such a high profile or multi national
business the different forms of communication that come
from a company, in every shape and form, from the use of
fonts on logos and letter heads to colours and designs
influence the minds and therefore the actions of
prospective clients.
So, what is this 'wow' factor? It's an image that you are
creating which gives your client an insight into your
values, expertise, personality, promise and vision. Could
there possibly be a better way of summing up your being
than in pieces of art work?
If you decide to invest in some pieces of art there are
companies around who will change them for you with the
seasons. This means that you don't actually have to buy the
pictures, but the chances are that you will get better
quality plus you will 'ring' the changes. This will
reinvigorate everyone, both employees and clients.
Previously we have only discussed clients, but remember
that it is your employees who will make or break a business
and they therefore need to be motivated and enthused by
what they do week in, week out, year after year. An
inspiring picture to look at is much better for the soul
that too much caffeine or alcohol!
Points to think about:
Stand back and look at the ambience of your business
objectively. Do your employees seem genuinely motivated, or
is it just an act they put on when you're around? Do
clients look enthused when you meet them in reception or
are they just bored by the visit?
Write down a mission statement. What would you like to say
to clients about your company?
Ask your employees for their opinions.
Take action. You can only try it and if it doesn't work
then you haven't lost much, but the chances are that your
profits will be much improved after six months, both
because your staff will be more motivated and your clients
more impressed.
